Pinterest Shot Lists Are A Great Way To Miss Capturing Candid Wedding Photos
Before we get started let me say that Pinterest is awesome. You can get allot of ideas on how to get things done and make it look great. Things from furniture, decor, food and even photography. I know this because my wife is really into DIY projects and much of her influence comes from Pinterest, although 80% is her on internal drive. But as a photographer who has been to a couple weddings in his time Pinterest can be a bad thing. In only one aspect and that is a “shot list” that is inspired from Pinterest or the internet in general.
Once and awhile we get emails from brides with images attached that they have seen on Pinterest that they would love to incorporate into their own wedding day. This sounds great and for the most part we do our best to include these ideas, but photographed our own way. However you should never expect these ideas to be the one and only way your wedding photos are to be captured. If your “shot list” is extensive and you tell your photographer to follow the list they may miss out on candid moments that happen naturally through out the day. This candid moments become the images that truly tell the story of your wedding day.
If you have an idea of how you would like your wedding to be photographed, that is wonderful and usually can be captured photographically. But a list will hinder the photographer and make he or she feel like they NEED to get the list out of the way prior to capturing the wedding their way. The way you loved and the reason you hired this photographer. A few props are an awesome way to bring your personality and creativity to your wedding photos. But if you see a photo on Pinterest taken in Southern California on the beach at sunset, is this really a possibly on your wedding day her in Southern Ontario?
In conclusion there is nothing wrong with a shot list of wedding photography ideas. As long as you understand that your photographer will use it as a starting point and take the shot list ideas and capture the wedding images from it their way. Who knows your wedding images may be on the next person wedding’s shot list. Which it should be as it will be unique and not a copy of an image seen online randomly.
