Neighbours of High Park – December Issue

Neighbours of High Park – December Issue

For those who do not know we are the official photographers for the magazine Neighbours of Hgh Park. Since this past December we have photographed the cover story. We have met absolutely wonderful people whom we have photographed ever since. We would like to share some of their stories with you right here on our blog. What better place to start than the first one we photographed for the December issue.

We include an excerpt from the magazine itself written by our good friend Cassandra Irving.

Andrew Pressburger was born in Hungary in 1935, four years before the out-break of World War II.

“I was Jewish, so part of a persecuted minority, but that did not play a big part of my life until the Nazis took over. In Germany, the Jewish population was wiped out totally. But Hungary was different. The governor of Hungary was allowed a little leeway until 1944 when Hitler didn’t feel the liquidation of the Jewish population was rigorous enough, so he sent in an occupying army and removed the governor and took over. They then began to deport Jews to Auschwitz under the direction of Adolph Eichmann,” says Andrew.

Fortunately, Russia invaded before Andrew’s family was deported to the camps and the country was liberated from the Nazis before they could do anything more. “In a way, I owe my life to them, brutes though they were,” says Andrew, referring to the occupying Russian army. “It (communism) was the lesser of two evils.” Andrew was a 10-year-old when the war finally ended in 1945. Though the Nazis were gone, he describes this period of his life as “going out of the frying pan and into the fire” as life under the communist regime was very oppressive.

It was an honor to meet this man and hear his story. He made me feel at home and asked a lot about me, even though I was there for him. Stay tuned for more posts from our Neighbours of High Park sessions as this was only the first in many tremendous stories.

WEDDING ADVICE – Do Not Follow Trends Follow Your Heart

WEDDING ADVICE – Do Not Follow Trends Follow Your Heart

We get it. Looking at the neighbors lawn and wishing ours was that green. It happens all of the time. We do it everyday. But in reality some things work for some and not for others. It has been this way since caveman number one had a wheel that rolled faster and farther than caveman number two’s. Planning your wedding is just the same. Except you don’t need two sticks to make a fire.

“That looks so cool” is something you will say on many times in many situations when you are planning your wedding. But be very careful that it is not a trend but actually something that says something about the two of you. If you meet at an ice cream parlor (if that still happens) and would like to take a few photographs there. THAT WORKS. But if you see and image on Pinterest from Texas with a bride and groom riding a bull on a farm with cowboy hats, that may not work if you live in Toronto and have zero interest in bulls.

Everyone person and everyone couple has something that makes them them. It could be that everyday you share a coffee from Starbucks. Why not make that happen on your wedding day. You could like reading together at a certain park under a certain tree. THAT WORKS. What if you both are into vintage clothing. Your wedding day attire can and should reflect that. These may seem like trends to some but it means something to the both of you. It would make for looking back on your wedding images with fondness.

As a photographer we love to find a story to tell with our images. We had a bride once wear sneakers on her wedding day, not just for the reception for the whole day and night. She mentioned it before the day to us and we thought she was following a trend. Then we asked why. When she was younger she would say to her favorite aunt that she would wear running shoes on her wedding day. This aunt passed away and she wore them in honor of her. That’s a really good reason and a story to tell forever. Weddings are about forever.

Goals for 2017

Goals for 2017

Nothing says HAPPY NEW YEAR like a list of resolutions. How many do you have? We constantly strive to do better as humans but “life” gets in the way. But we tend to fall behind our resolutions by Valentine’s day. Not this year…says everyone. We will try our very best to keep tabs on these and you can help us. By making these public we will hold ourselves accountable. If not we will just delete the post and swear it never existed. The following is not in any set order. We only jotted them down as they came to us and picked the 5 we thought were more important to the studio.

Get more social on social media…

What an awesome idea…use social media to be MORE social. This is an idea that everyone should be doing. We generally are losing out on interacting with one another on the internet. Social media should be used to bring us all closer, not matter where we are. We also would really like to learn things about each as well as laugh a little more. Follow us on Facebook to see what we mean.

150 blog posts in 2017…

Sounds like a big number but it really isn’t. That’s 2.8 posts a week to be exact. Our real goal is 3 a week which would make it 156 posts in 2017. But make we need a little more wiggle room. We will be posting ideas, tips, top 5 lists, wedding advice, as well as our awesome clients with the images we photograph.

shot 50 images a week not related to work…

On a weekly basis we are going to take at least 50 images not related to our current work load. This can be anything and everything. To keep tabs follow Chris on Instagram for the latest. We are even coming up with assignments for one another which should be fun. “I hope you guys like to find things that start with the letter Z” says Chris laughing.

120 headshots…

Our goal is to visit so many offices and business that by the end of the year we will have taken over 120 head shots. If your office or place of business needs fresh images of your pretty faces get in touch with us. We may even find a way to get yours taken for free.

Touch our clients (not what you think)…

In our business group the City Club we talk about touching our clients. This can be in many ways that are not physical. This will be with email, social media as well as everyday interactions. I would love to get into details but that would ruin all of the surprises. To know more get on our email list.

Fundserv Customer Appreciation Event

Fundserv Customer Appreciation Event

Giving back to customers is always a good idea. But giving back to customer’s while you throw an awesome party is a great idea. A few weeks ago we had the privilege to photograph the Fundserv customer appreciation event. Being held at the awesome Copacabana on Adelaide. With over 200 guests in attendance the night was an absolute success. We ran into many people who had nothing but great things to say about Fundserv and their staff. Many of which have been customers of theirs since day one.

The Copacabana staff helped make the night a success as well. With the constant stream of tremendous food and drinks well into the night. We even had a pair of Brazilian dancers entertain us on two separate occasions through out the evening. A few guests tried hand at a little samba but they paid me well not to show those images. But if you pay me more maybe we can post them for a limited time.

The job did come with a few dangers. Let’s see how well you do dodging dancers, servers and regular people standing still with one eye closed looking through a camera. As the night progressed my cat like reflexes became more and more heightened. As if I achieved my black belt in NINJA…stop laughing it’s a thing.

Reflections on 2016

Reflections on 2016

2016 was a balanced year for us here at Studio Cabral. We had many awesome clients that we worked with and had a great experience photographing. We tried a few new things within our studio that helped us get on track, and stay on track. We made lists, plans, graphs, pie charts, diagrams and took miles of notes. We found out what was important in our business and what we needed to do better to grow and move forward in a positive direction. We also stopped doing many things that didn’t help us achieve our goals. Most of it was time wasting. You will only find one computer in our studio with internet access. You would be surprised how many hours are lost on Facebook, YouTube and working on your fantasy football team.

In terms of our actual photography we took better care of our lighting and composition. Something that can get a little sloppy if you do not pay attention to it. It made our work that much better. We like the feel and look of our work but we are constantly working on it so we can honestly say that we will not be satisfied. That is a good thing. We made it a priority to focus more on clients as individuals and not as a group. Everyone is different and that is an awesome thing. Like being a coach of the Maple Leafs certain people need to be talked to a certain way. It helps when you reach on a human level. It does sound corny but we do become friends for years and years.

We became proud of being open since 1987. In March of 2017 Studio Cabral will reach 30 years in business. That should be talked about and celebrated. Many times we thought that it was a hindrance being open for so long. But experience is a positive in life and especially business. It has also brought into our minds the importance of planning forward and looking ahead often. Goals need to be set, reached and surpassed. Which will lead to new and more exciting goals. Stay tuned for our goals for 2017 it will be very open and honest.
