My Favorite Time Of Day To Photograph

My Favorite Time Of Day To Photograph

Last week a friend of mine passed by the studio and we talked about many things as we usually do. While the caffeine from the coffee was kicking in he asked what was my favorite time of day to photograph. I was left speechless for the first time in a long time. The last time was while I was watching Notting Hill for the 457th time and still wondered why Hugh Grant let Julia Roberts walk out of his store before leaving for good. I pondered the question long and hard and told him I would get back to him on the exact time of day is my favorite to photograph.

I really thought about it for a while off and on for a few days. Was it during the morning when the day is new? Could it be mid day when the afternoon is getting going? What about late afternoon when the sun is just about to set in the west? Everyone knows night time is the right time, right? You would also need to take into consideration what time of year if you really wanted to get into it. But I decided not to take the seasons into consideration. That would just add to my decision making process and take more time. He called about 6 days after or conversation in the studio just to talk about the latest Walking Dead episode and asked just in passing if I had an answer. I did not.

But I said that I would have an answer for him in 24 hours. With the clock ticking and Jack Bauer racing to the finish line looking for an answer I thought what about now? As in my favorite time of day to photograph was right now. Why not? Capturing images cannot be set to a specific time of day. If you have an idea do you wait for the right moment to write it down, no you take care of it right then and there. My mind set while taking pictures is simple, you take what is given. If it is sunny use it, if it’s raining deal with it. Your photographs should not be taken within a exact time.

I like to go for walks with my camera in hand and usually head out without a plan. I allow the situation and location to dictate how or what I photograph. That could be 5pm or 5am. Although 5am may not work for you. Most of the time while on a shoot both for business of pleasure I follow a certain number of guidelines but usually that changes as I feel. So I cannot pick a certain time of day because infinite details go into how the images are taken, and that is the awesome part. When my friend passed by once again my answer was simple. Right Now.

Latest Commercial Shoots From February

Latest Commercial Shoots From February

In the world of photography you can photograph anything and everything. We are no exception at Studio Cabral, we get many different objects to photograph. Some big, some small but all are important to those that bring them in to be photographed. It could be for their own business and they need to get a few fresh images on their website. Or they could have an interesting collection of shoes. I’m looking at you ladies. Either way, if it is important to our clients it is in turn important to us.

Last month we had someone pass through with a bunch of records. They were looking to sell some of them online and wanted them to look there best. I am thinking the Grease album will move quick…It may be the “One That You Want”…Get it?. A Chef came calling with an idea for a cook book and wanted a cover shot with a few of his favorite spices. We also met a lovely young woman who only wears white Chuck Taylor’s. That love is so deep that she wanted some wall art for her living room. Her only request was for us to be a little different about it. To top it off we even had the opportunity to photograph some cappuccinos AND drink them too.

Every month we get to photograph great pieces from far and wide. We love the chance to create something different every day. In many cases these are things that we would never think of photographing. But the end up challenging us as well as helping us grow our craft. At the end of the day we all want to get better at what we do. There is no room for you to stand still, only to stand apart.

Your Wedding Album – Top 5 reasons to get it professionally designed

Top 5 reasons to get a professionally designed wedding album

Your wedding day is and always will be perfect to you. No matter how great it was and how many memories can be shared from that day. It will not matter if you do not have something physical that you can pass down from generation to generation. We will not always be here, but our stories and our images can. Your great, great grandchildren will be able to flip through your wedding album and be able to see what love was like generations before them. I am very sure that they will not have any idea how to work that USB with all images on them, just like you or I have no idea how to work that 8 track cassette. If you even know what I’m talking about.

We have put together our top 5 reasons to get a professionally designed wedding album for you to share with all of your friends and or family planning their wedding’s. This is not to tell anyone that they have to get a professionally designed wedding album. or else. It is just to educate on the why it is important to strive to get something that will last for generations and tell your love story. The many generations before us never had that opportunity to share with us like we do for those still to come in the future. It is your chance to have something last longer than you ever will, like your own personal time machine. Except this doesn’t come with Michael J Fox.

5 – Longevity
This will last for years and years and years….and years. Not sure if we can but we are currently looking for vampires to no avail. But if they do pop up we will let you know. If you could guarantee that your wedding day would live on forever why not?

4 – Time Saving
You just had in some cases over 2 years of planning your wedding. You may need to take a break from that part of your life for awhile. Then guess what? Life gets in the way again. Between mortgage payments and children you may need that extra time for other more important things. Doing your own album online sounds like a great idea but do you have the experience in doing it. That’s why a professional designed wedding album will save you time as well as a headache or three.

3 – Trends
In this case we do not follow them. Your wedding album should and will stand the test of time. The purpose is to be enjoyed for generations and become a family heirloom. It should not be a running joke because you thought maybe adding a few snap chat filters would be awesome. Trust me our future children will laugh at us if we follow a trend. Just like we laugh at our parents for their love of ABBA. No offense to ABBA and their loyal fans.

2 – Durability
Getting your wedding album professionally designed means it will be professionally finished. That includes paper, binding, cover, and special coating on both the layouts as well as your cover. It also will stand up to any and all toddlers that may or may not come through your home in the future.

1 – Story Telling
Your wedding day is a story, your story. The story of how and why these two people came together. We photograph to tell the story and we have in mind how the wedding day will unfold within the wedding album. That is our goal at every event, telling that story. Not just capture pretty images, we are story tellers. Wouldn’t it be a shame to not tell the story how the “director” thought it should be told? Only a professional knows how that story should be told and finished.

Christine & Marcel – Mississauga Convention Centre Wedding

Christine & Marcel – Mississauga Convention Centre Wedding

Christine and Marcel were married this past September. It was the kind of wedding day that you dream of. Beautiful blue skies and an awesome sunny day with a mild temperature. The perfect mix for a perfect wedding day. They even had an awesome bridal party that helped Christian and I capture some great images.

Our day started in the very east end of Toronto. Marcel had a full list of props for us to use but we really liked that basement bar which came complete with cigars. After we took notes on wine thanks to Marcel’s vast knowledge. You just never know when and where you learn new things. But we had to leave for the bride’s getting ready images and a trip down memory lane. You see Christine’s parents wedding photos were taken by my father a few years back. Just awesome seeing the images and politely saying no, when asked if we can do a few of the poses.

The ceremony was held at St. Joseph the Worker in Thornhill, our first visit there. It seemed like most of the people invited to the wedding were there. Which is a nice change of pace from those who only attend the reception. After the wedding ceremony the bride and groom were bombarded with bubbles and when everyone participates it can get bubbly. A quick drive in their rented antique Rolls Royce we arrived at Black Creek Pioneer Village for formal portraits.

The wedding reception was held at the Mississauga Convention Centre and we knew they would do an awesome job, and they did as usual. All of the wedding guests were all treated to a choreographed first dance form the bride and groom. Which was a nice change of pace. It felt like Dancing With The Stars. Except we wouldn’t dare judge or give any grades other than perfect.

Why we choose to convert a photo to black + white

Why we choose to convert a photo to black + white

There are only 2 reasons that we choose to make an image black and white. Quite frankly nothing monumental goes into it. Either we really like the contrast and sometimes black and white adds another dimension to that contrast. The other? we made a mistake. But how so you may ask. Easy. We had a hard time with the color correction either in camera or out of camera. We then think I really like this image. BAM…black and white.

I know that you were looking for a more artistic answer but that’s the truth. You may run into someone who only shoots in black and white and that is the only exception. Let’s just say you are in a room that has a weird lighting mix and you cannot figure it out. But you really love that column, window and door combo. Shoot it and make it black and white. You are the artist and do not need to explain yourself, unless you want to.

There was a time in the not to distant past when we had this stuff called film. Our only option was to use film in our cameras in order to get pictures. Now times have changed, some say for the better. But for me as a teenager going to the store and grabbing a roll of black and white film was great. I could only afford that roll of black and white with 24 images ready to be captured with your camera. From time to time I purchase a roll to or two and shoot on the old camera. I even develop it myself.

I feel for me that I scratch that black and white itch with film. Perhaps that’s why I think that only 10% of my images are black and white. It may have been more even if we could see in both black and white as well as color. But we can’t, although I’m sure someone at Apple is working on it.
