Neighbours of High Park – March Issue

Neighbours of High Park – March Issue

For the March issue of Neighbours of High Park we had the awesome opportunity to photograph Meaghan and Dave from Parkside Drive. We met up at their apartment and stayed for an hour to shoot and talk about music. You may notice that I did use a prop from the Beatles, which was just lying around. The written segment below is by my friend Cassandra Irving.

Meet Meghan Parnell and Dave Barnes

With their edgy style and wall of guitars, it is easy to tell as you walk into Meghan Parnell and Dave Barnes’ High Park apartment that they are musicians. “Dave wanted to move closer to downtown, so when he found this apartment between the top of Roncesvalles and the bottom of the Junction and across from one of Toronto’s great music venues, Hugh’s Room, it seemed perfect. The place has a lot of character and enough space for us both to work from home, and it’s minutes away from all forms of public transportation,” says Meghan.
The two first met years ago when Dave was auditioning singers for his cover band, Parkside Drive. “I was gigging with one of his friends at the time. He asked if he could pass my information on to Dave. I auditioned for the band and was hired that night,” remembers Meghan. The two became very good friends over the next couple of years. They began dating and doing life together and now are common law partners as well as band mates and business partners. Dave, who graduated from Humber College with a diploma in Jazz Studies and a Bachelor of Arts, is the full-time band leader for Parkside Drive, a Toronto-based event band.

“We play corporate functions and weddings, covering a variety of music to appeal to all ages and music preferences. We also play a number of bars in the city where our repertoire tends to focus on blues and soul music,” says Dave. “Nine years ago we hadn’t named the band yet, but had a gig coming up. Dave lived close to Parkside and suggested it as a name. It stuck immediately. We find it funny that in almost every city we play, there’s a Parkside Drive nearby. So we always get asked if we are named after that particular street,” says Meghan. Meghan, who has been working in the film industry for the last 15 years, recently decided to leave her day-job and pursue her music career full-time. She says she’s most excited about a new original music project she and Dave are collaborating on. “We’re forming a new five-piece band called Bywater and will be focusing on sounds of the south–blues, gospel and southern rock inspired music.”

Meghan says they have started performing the new material in a few Toronto venues and are planning to record an EP later this year. “Dave and I will be taking the music of Bywater out West to the Vancouver area in April, performing as a duo on a short West Coast tour along with a couple of friends who have an original project of their own.” When not performing or practicing, Dave spends a lot of time working on his amplifiers and guitars, and Meghan is taking mandolin lessons. They also like to check out the live music scene in the city. “And we’re big food fans. We’ll often check out new brunch spots with friends who live in the area, including Roncesvalles, Bloor and Keele, the Junction and Bloor West Village.” Meghan says that she and Dave are also Toronto Sports fans. “We are big Blue Jays fans. In fact, we are toying with the idea of attending a spring training game in Florida. We also, over the last few years, have been following the Raptors, especially during playoffs. I guess we’re fair-weather fans,” Meghan admits with a chuckle. “It feels like the whole city is coming together when we are rallying behind our sports teams!” When they can, Dave and Meghan enjoy taking trips to cities that inspire them musically.

“We went to Cuba this winter for the third time. We always make sure to seek out local music. The last time we went, instead of staying at an all-inclusive hotel, we rented a car and drove from Varadero to Trinidad City to Havana. We stayed in ‘cas’ where locals rent out rooms in their homes, so we were really able to get a feel for the cities. The music was wonderful, especially in Havana, and we were able to really connect with the musicians themselves,” says Meghan. “We also LOVE New Orleans. I’ve been twice and Dave has been three times. The first time we went we absolutely fell in love with the place. Again, it was the music that really got us. They have clearly maintained their musical identity there and the musicians show a lot of support for each other. We would see someone from a show we just went to show up later at another bar to check out their friend’s gig. And the food is amazing and the city is beautiful.” Meghan says they also enjoyed Chicago and would love to go back sometime soon. “Especially because both Dave and I have a strong connection with the Blues. Buddy Guy has a great bar there. It has live music pretty much all day, every day. Buddy Guy himself frequents the bar; in fact, we got to meet him one night.”

How To Know If You Need A Second Photographer at Your Wedding

How To Know If You Need A Second Photographer at Your Wedding

Should you have a second photographer at your wedding? That is the million dollar question we are asked on a daily basis. There are days that we are asked if three photographers are enough. To us the answer is hidden in a few different questions that only the couple getting married can answer. Since everyone is different we can find many different answers to this important question. Many think it is easy to say for sure you need 2,3 or even 4 photographers, but that is not always the case. I have said it before we want to be a ninja that works away in and around the wedding but are rarely seen, only when they need to be seen.

We will be the first to tell you that our job is to document the event and capture everything. That is only achieved by knowing what is about to happen at all times. This is only possible when all vendors are working together and the wedding timeline is shared with all. I for one will answer that you truly only need one photographer but that may just be me. When I am at an event I act as if I am the only one there and should capture everything and usually I do. However you cannot be at two places at once. But on many occasions I have found that once you have a game plan and know the layout of where the event is it can seem like you are at two places at once. Like a ninja.

However, if your wedding is more on the traditional side and many different customs are taking place at the same time, then 2 photographers are a great idea. Many cultures have separate customs taking place within different rooms at the same time. This is an obvious yes to get a second photographer. That may be too much for even the most experienced ninja to handle. There is also a need to capture both candid images with the traditional. This as well could be a great opportunity to add a second photographer. Sometimes two minds are better than one, but those minds need to be on the same page.

You may be a person who loves photography and feel that the more images the better. In which case good for you, you get a high five. You can get as many photographer to capture your event as your budget allows. For those who are ok with a solo shooter remember it is not a bad thing to have one photographer at your wedding capturing all of your images. That photographer should be experienced and always have a timeline handy, or memorized. In conclusion if you have many things occurring in and around the same time in different locations a second photographer is a great idea. If you have a low key event with a more casual vibe, one photographer may work for you. In the end you may already know the answer.

Top 5 Cities I Want To Visit (USA)

Top 5 cities I want to visit (USA)

5 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The number one reason I would like to visit Philadelphia other then the Rocky movies is the city is the headquarters for Mitchell and Ness. If you like anything related to throw back sports clothing you already know about Mitchell and Ness. Not sure how much money I would bring to their store on 1201 Chestnut St. but it won;t be enough. I may come home with anything and everything Toronto. But I may also bring some 49er gear back with me, however I could use a Joe Montana jersey in white.

4 – New Orleans, Louisiana

I would like to start by saying I would not visit “Nawlins” during Mardi Gras. I cannot keep up with that party pace anymore and quite frankly I’m not sure I ever could. The history is what drives me to go, but my vast reading of Anne Rice novels have lead to that. In a city founded in 1718 you can be sure to find multiple options for historical content, and photography locations as well.

3 – Chicago, Illinois

On a flight back home to Toronto from Las Vegas my father and I had a late night connecting flight in Chicago to catch. This is after we found out mid air why Chicago is called the windy city. The turbulence was so bad we thought that was it. Putting that experience aside we did have time to take in Chicago while at O’Hare airport for an hour or so. I found the people very interesting and made a mental note to come back one day. Wrigley field would be on the to do list for sure.

2 – Charleston, South Carolina

My wife feel in love with Charleston from afar a very long time ago. We actually tossed the idea of having our honeymoon there but a little city in France named Paris won. The lure comes from the charm and the need to visit was driven into overdrive thanks to an episode of Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain. We watched the episode and took notes on the restaurants he visited and vowed to go soon. How soon we do not know.

1 – San Francisco, California

This city is in my DNA. You see my great grand father left Portugal in 1911 for work in California only to return 14 years later. Growing up I was always drawn to the city of San Francisco and thought it was because I loved the 49ers. Turns out it may be family history from the past generations that pulls me in. It is on the bucket list of places to visit but will have to be in the fall so that I may join with the faithful and watch my Niners at their home.

Renaissance By The Creek Wedding – Jessica & Anthony

Renaissance By The Creek Wedding – Jessica & Anthony

Jessica and Anthony were married this past September and held their reception at Renaissance by the creek in Mississauga. Our studio was booked solid an that day but the images captured at this wedding event were some of the best of 2016. With a great group and a very enthusiastic bride and groom it’s only natural that they had great images. The day was helped by a very well thought out wedding timeline as well as a wonderful late summer’s day with the temperature in the low 20’s. If you are in the states don’t worry that’s in Celsius.

Anthony was ready for us bright and early at 7am with his dark navy blue suit and tan shoes. That look is awesome and really hot right now, good choice by Anthony. Jessica looked radiant in a very beautiful of the shoulder dress. For her to be put together by 9am is just awesome. Considering I am barely awake by 10am on most days. Without a moment missed we were right on time for the ceremony at St. Francis of Assisi. The bride and groom were married at 11:30 am on that glorious day within that glorious church. Which is one of our all time favorite ceremony locations, when it is not under renovations.

With many hours to work with prior to the reception we drove through Toronto with the GPS locked on Glendon College. It is a real gem in the heart of Toronto for anyone looking for great wedding images. It is one of the more timeless locations that we love to photograph in and around. We captured many images of these two love birds before we moved onto Mississauga and Renaissance by the creek for the reception. Which by all accounts was the party of the year, for those who could remember it that is.

Top 5 Reasons You Should Get Engagement Photos

Top 5 Reasons You Should Get Engagement Photos

In many ways your engagement photos are more important than your wedding photos. I said in many ways not in all the ways, because you can never recreate your actual wedding day. But there are a few reasons why your engagement session will be beneficial in achieving awesome images on your wedding day. How you ask? Well it’s simple. The following Top 5 reasons why you should get engagement photos will lead you down the path to great wedding day images. The kind that you will cherish and pass down to the next generations to share.

Number 5 – Test Out A Location

If you are getting married in the winter but would really love to get a different look? Maybe the summer or fall. You can have your engagement session at the same location as you will capture your wedding images. That way you can have a complete different look that only a different season can provide. But more importantly you can get a test drive of your first choice just in case it really is not your first choice after all. We have taken this approach with a few couples and it worked out well and helped them come to the location decision.

Number 4 – An Excuse To Dress UP

A few couples have used their engagement photo session as an excuse to dress up. A few have even gone as far as to have a concept where we can bring in props, sets and even costumes. We still are looking for that special couple to do that “Walking Dead” session, but that’s a story for another day. It can make for an exciting added layer to your wedding day images. If there is a theme for your wedding your engagement photos can be incorporated as well within it.

Number 3 – You Can Learn

The great rap group Run DMC said it best. “The next time someone’s teaching why don’t you get taught”. Your engagement photos can be a learning experience that helps you understand that images are made not taken. Anyone can take a picture, but to tell a story with photographs makes an artist. It is within the engagement photo session you will learn that there is a process in achieving great images. The process is a fun experience and not one where we take one picture and call it a day.

Number 2 – Your A Teacher

Everyone is different in case you have never noticed. We all love, speak, feel, think and walk differently. You can teach your photographer how you to show your love for one another. Some people are shy and share their love more privately while others yell it from the rooftops. But each one can show it in their way. As a photographer sometimes we need to learn how is you choose to show it. That is the fun part of the job, finding where the love comes from and showcase it. You can be a teacher in that regard as we learn something new everyday.

Number 1 – Practice makes perfect

We have all heard of the saying but how can it relate to your engagement photos? It is simple, and for us it is the most obvious reason, which is why it comes in at number one. You need an opportunity to see, feel, touch and taste the experience of having a professional photographer capture your images before your wedding. It is crucial for you to know what to expect on your wedding day. The only way to do so is to have a dress rehearsal without the dress of course. You have both had your picture taken by friends but those are snaps at a club or family gathering. Not an ideal situation to promote love.
