Top 5 Lessons Learned from the 2017 Wedding Season

Top 5 Lessons Learned from the 2017 Wedding Season

With only a few weeks left until all of the “New Year New Me” posts we have taken a look back on the 2017 wedding season. There are a few wedding dates still to capture but we have found a few points to reflect on form the past year already. No matter what age you each day brings forth new lessons. You can either learn from them or not, your choice. We thought it would be a great idea to let our 2018 brides and grooms know what we have learned from 2017 and maybe they can bring some good vibes to their wedding day.

Less Devices More Smiles

If you think having a device free wedding ceremony is a good idea this slow clap is for you. On a wedding day we get the excitement and joy, you feel the need to capture that one moment that will last forever. We completely understand. However if you feel the need to get in the way of the one person paid to do so then there may be an issue. Not with us but the bride and groom. Picture this, you are walking down the aisle and you are about to see your future husband for the first time on your wedding day. Then suddenly your aunt’s iPad is slowing inching it’s way further and further into the middle of the aisle and you miss that first glimpse. Have that aunt and every other guests put those devices away and bring them out later on. Designate a time for the less formal images you need for social media. Leave the important moments to the pros…pretty please

Size Does Not Matter

Relax, we mean bridal party size not anything else. Big or small your bridal party can be whatever number you decide it needs to be. 20 people total? not a problem. 2 happy go lucky souls, awesome. The key factor should be do they get along. It could make for an issue or 6 if their personalities do not jive with one another. We had a few awkward moments during a wedding or two in 2017 that could’ve been avoided. Schedule a few get together’s with your bridal party, that should do the trick.

First Looks Are Awesome

In 2017 we had the pleasure of photographing 3 different first looks. Each one a little different from the next but all fun, sweet and intimate. For those less traditional it is an exciting way of releasing that nervous wedding day energy. One minute not knowing what to expect the next happy, happy joy, joy. Of course if you do not like surprises this may not be your cup of tea. But we do catch all of the honest reactions and those are priceless.

The Devil Is In The Details

All weddings are unique in their own little and sometimes large ways. But it’s the little things we remember. It could be mini Nutella bottle giveaways at your receiving line. Cake pops that make your moth water. Late night Tiny Tom Donuts. These little things make for large impressions. Mostly because they are yummy but also because…never mind they are just awesome and yummy. These little details make for smiles and conversation that in many cases last months and even years. 2017 was filled with many smiles and conversations in that regard.

Make Prints

This is a public service announcement…PRINT YOUR IMAGES. We stopped counting when people would say I lost all of my (insert important event here) pictures after I lost my card, laptop, iPad, phone and or whatever else you store your images. Ask your parents or even your grandparents where they stored their images. That’s right on the wall, in an album or in frames on that night table you stole candies from. You never heard them every say I lost all of my 44th birthday party photos after I lost my 32gb card. Understand that images are important and we need to display them individually on the wall or an album and not on a slideshow. Your history is in those images on your cell phone right now, if you lose them they are gone. Start by backing them up, then graduate to printing them.

The Real Guide To Hiring A Wedding Photographer

The Real Guide To Hiring A Wedding Photographer

In a few short weeks with the start of the new year comes the wedding planning season. For those who will be involved for the first time as they start their wedding planning it can be a very stressful time. Too many vendors to focus on with too little the time to focus. Now we cannot help you with all of the vendors. What we can do is focus on the wedding photography part of your wedding vendor checklist. Studio Cabral was opened in March of 1987 and in that time we have seen a thing or 16 within the industry. Trends come and go but one thing will always remain, the need to document important events. And a wedding day is an important event that needs to be documented.

What better way to tell the story of your wedding day then with images. A photograph says a thousand words after all. But not all images are created equal and not every image maker the same. A person planning a wedding can get lost in many things while hiring a wedding photographer. We can help you narrow that search with just a few ideas. Through our experience we know which way you need to be headed. We can save you the trouble and just tell you to book us and your battle will be won, and it will but this is about the journey. But the journey can be a simple if you allow it to be, by following our path.

Get yourself a few referrals from family and friends. They are your best knowledge base and the most honest. Or if you have been in a recent bridal party and liked the flow of the day and photographer, you can start there. Pick three different wedding photographers and meet with them on your time and see if you guys are on the same page. Often times it can really be that simple in finding your wedding photographer. Being on the same page in regards to wedding photography can be the be all and end all in your selection. You cannot underestimate that at all.

Budgets are useful for things like your wedding venue and or limo. But for photography and maybe say a florist it may not be that helpful. You will most likely not factor in something very important. It could be a certain type of album or even a canvas for your wall. These are newer things that you probably did not factor into your budget and may desire. Do not let your budget dictate what you really truly want. When it is all said and done what are you really left with after your wedding day. Shouldn’t a budget if there is one reflect that. I would leave a budget for your photography blank and yes that is my honest statement not a bias one.

Last but not least is experience. We can talk about this until we are blue in the face but this is like insurance on your wedding day. On any given day unforeseen things happen and a wedding day is no exception. If I hired someone to install new windows in my home or wash my car, fix a leak, change a tire you would be more comfortable knowing that person has done that job before. It goes without saying that an experienced wedding photographer will get you through the unforeseen troubles that may pop up.

There you have it the real guide to hiring a wedding photographer. Once you get rid of the sizzle the steak is left and that is the important part…unless your a vegetarian, at which point substitute the steak with a pepper. Hiring a wedding photographer is fairly simple, you do not need to extend yourself any further than you need or want to go. Look for someone with experience that you connect well with and who comes well recommended by either yourself or someone you trust.

8 Tips For A Great Wedding Day First Look

8 Tips For A Great Wedding Day First Look

Timing

In life just as in any photography session timing is everything. In order to have a great first look you need to have a great timeline to work with. You need to set aside a proper amount of time to let the first look have the greatest impact. The time you have could be 5 minutes but the images of your first look at each other on your wedding day is priceless and the most honest images of your wedding day.

Secrecy

It would be great to have a private location all to yourselves and yes you can have that but sometimes you need a little more secrecy. That can be found anywhere and at anytime. Ideally you with just the two of you but family, friends and bridal party can come to. Just try to be as silent as possible and not let any “surprises” out.

Location

Maybe the most important is location but we put it in the middle for fun and to throw you off. A great first look location can be anywhere but works best when there is a path and or wall to separate you both and to add a sense of mystery. Maybe even a little private spot that gives you a few moments alone and to let it sink in.

Have Fun With It

Add a few props like a blindfold. But keep it PG there may be children present, if not you can go all out fifty shades. That’s a joke…I think. You can bring anything into play as long as it fits with your personality.

Be Yourself

There is nothing less authentic than trying to be something you are not. Be true to yourself and let the moment feel and look right. If you try to do too much or something you are not accustomed to it will show, photography does not lie.

Involve Others

Have a large group with you? Make them do something. You can get a whole bunch of balloons and create a balloon wall. Have a load countdown and let them fly. Make sure no clowns are around or your photographer may have breakdown…I am deathly afraid of clowns FYI

Communication

Long before talk out the game plan. Go over angles, timing, location and any little question you may have. Nothing sounds worse out load than someone saying “What do I do now”. It works best and photographs well as one big fluid motion.

Focus On Each Other

Do not get distracted the first look is as it sounds. It is the first look you each have onto one another on your wedding day. It should be special and involve just the two of you. Unless something extremely rare is happening (like a UFO landing) than you should just look at one another.

Toronto Skyline Engagement Session

Toronto Skyline Engagement Session

The iconic Toronto Skyline that we know and love so much is a very high request for most of our clients for their engagement sessions. It could be that because our studio has at any one time at least 2 different images on our wall from there. It could also be and what is more likely the case that it is THE best skyline on earth that makes it a number one request photography location. But for Jessica and Michael it was the only choice and drove all the way from Brampton on a weekday through Toronto traffic to get it. You have to admire that kind of commitment but after all it’s Toronto.

We all drove together from the studio to our numero uno location and talked about everything. The most notable being why Michael’s favorite hockey team is the Ottawa Senators when everyone knows that you either LOVE the Maple Leafs or your wrong. We tried for an entire car ride to figure out why Ottawa when he has lived in Toronto his whole life, but we concluded that he is just wrong and moved on. At the very least this Senators fan has an awesome engagement session to show his fellow Ottawa fans, all four of them. We can only hope that Jessica can guide him on the right path and bring back to the good old Blue and White.

Joking aside this June wedding will be a fun one, if it’s anything close to the laughs that were shared on this engagement session it will be. We are looking forward to it as we are for all of our 2018 weddings. It is shaping up to be an off the charts year for awesome wedding days. Wedding days that we will capture images to last a lifetime.
